A Haven for Wildlife

Chisholme is wonderful patchwork of garden, pasture and woodland, some parts ancient and untouched, some left to grow as they please, some planted and managed. There are glades of wildflowers to enchant the eye, marshy bits to lose one’s wellies in, a lake and bubbly stream to sit by, and quiet, moss-covered hollows deep among the pines, good for contemplating the universe.

Wildlife: As well as the usual rabbits, mice, voles and moles, there are fox, Roe deer, stoat, weasel and badger. Some hares live quite close to the main house, and seem to engage in their Mad March activity in April. At this time it is possible to get very close to them, so absorbed are they in what they are doing. As a rare and special treat, red squirrels have made a come-back in recent years and can be seen regularly all around the estate.

Chisholme is a paradise for birdwatchers. Buzzards, barn owls, woodpeckers, dippers and a host of small garden and woodland birds nest on the estate, while the surrounding moors are alive with the call of lapwing, curlew and the song of the sky lark.
