Geometry: Sacred Art and Symbolic Language

Oct 12, 2013 15:00
London
Beshara Trust

With Tom Bree

Geometry is the 'incarnation' of number. It is what the eternal and unchanging reality of number looks like when it takes on a body. The practise of hand drawn geometry with compasses and straight-edge is commonly perceived to be a form of prayer, meditation or contemplation – as well as art form – within many different religious traditions. It allows the 'hidden treasure' of mathematical truth to become known via its movement into Creation and in this sense the geometer acts as midwife. This session will consist of a slideshow-talk followed by a practical drawing session in which participants will draw geometric patterns from the Christian and Islamic traditions of sacred art.

Tom is a geometer–artist, teacher and writer. He teaches practical geometry in sacred art at the Prince's School of Traditional Arts in London as well as on his own teaching projects both here in the UK and abroad. Tom is currently researching a PhD about the underlying geometric design of Wells Cathedral in Somerset.
