Talk/Forum and Day Conference

The World Happiness Report (published in 2012 by the Earth Institute, Columbia University) and the Humankind Index for Scotland (published by Oxfam Scotland) is the basis for this conference, with an intention to connect to contemporary Scotland. This follows from the UN General Assembly’s suggestion to its member states that they should in future give more attention to this subject of happiness in their public policy making.

"We live in an age of stark contradictions. The world enjoys technologies of unimaginable sophistication; yet has at least one billion people without enough to eat each day. The world economy is propelled to soaring new heights of productivity through ongoing technological and organizational advance; yet is relentlessly destroying the natural environment in the process...These contradictions would not come as a shock to the greatest sages of humanity, including Aristotle and the Buddha. The sages taught humanity, time and again, that material gain alone will not fulfill our deepest needs."  (World Happiness Report 2012)

The conference will begin on Friday evening with a talk/forum featuring a keynote speech entitled 'Happiness is a Political Choice' by Robin McAlpine, Director of the Jimmy Reid Foundation and editor of the Scottish Left Review, followed by three short talks and an audience discussion.

The conference will continue throughout Saturday exploring happiness, health and well-being from various perspectives, starting with a summary of the Friday evening and ending with a plenary session. Throughout the day there will be talks, music, comedy, poetry, and also laughing yoga.
