Finding a balanced and progressive path to self-discovery
The weekend course will include the following elements :
Study and conversation
When enquiring into who and what we are, it is helpful to know where to place our attention and intention. What is self-knowledge, and who is it that knows it? A clear understanding of such basic facts helps to direct our efforts. During these sessions we will draw on the insights of some of the greatest minds on the subject of our radical humanity, and see how they apply to our knowledge of ourselves. Sitting in the round we will explore the principles of unity as explained by Rumi, Ibn 'Arabi, Meister Eckhardt and others. We will see how the wisdom traditions framed ideas of reality, and how we do so in our time. God, consciousness, love, emptiness, spirit, being, universe, life, awareness, self, enlightenment, union – all are expressive of the same one reality which is also our reality.
Mindfulness
There will be guided meditations several times a day, based on mindfulness practice. Rather than seeking specific experiences, mindfulness trains us to be aware of what is happening, while it's happening, without preference – an important doorway into self awareness and being fully present. We will also practice body scans, mindful movement, chi gung, and bringing all aspects of our selves into awareness. The aim of these practices is to encourage greater constancy of awareness of reality as it presents itself moment by moment.
Interaction
There will be time between the sessions for informal contact, as well as opportunities for one-to-one time with the facilitators (on request). The evenings will be given to open discussion, watching a video, or following up what came up during the day.
Ambience
The ambience of the course is one of lightness, ease, openness and deep enquiry. The aim is not to adopt a belief system, but to open and accept the ever-present gift of life and the depths of being it offers when we turn to self-enquiry, which is never fixed. The effect of this can be transformative, and set our lives on a path of progressive self discovery, opening into all things.
