Introduction to Bohmian Dialogue
Jun 30, 2013 00:00 to 23:59
Chisholme House, Scottish Borders, TD9 7PH
Developed by the distinguished physicist David Bohm (1917–1992), Bohmian Dialogue is a powerful and revealing process into the dynamics of “group thought” with no predefined purpose and no agenda, other than that of enquiring into the movement of thought and exploring the process of "thinking together" collectively.
“You may ask, if we have such pressing problems why we should waste our time just talking. But I say that our problems originate because we can’t engage in this activity of just talking together, and when we try to deal with our serious problems, we find that we are not meeting.” David Bohm
This revolutionary form of dialogue seeks to enable an awareness of why communicating in the verbal sphere is so much more difficult and conflict-ridden than in all other areas of human activity and endeavour. It has been seen as an arena in which collective learning takes place and out of which a sense of increased harmony, fellowship and creativity can arise.
“The spirit of Dialogue is one of free play, a sort of collective dance of the mind that, nevertheless, has immense power and reveals coherent purpose. Once begun it becomes continuing adventure that can open the way to significant and creative change.” David Bohm
Bohm Dialogue is not group therapy. It is conscious conversation, purely around whatever needs or wants to be said, heard and followed and indeed, how silence might speak or be heard too, within the group. It is suitable for anyone with an enquiring mind and for a wide variety of contexts.

Facilitators
Hester Reeve a Senior Lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University, integrated Bohm Dialogue into the Contemporary Fine Art degree in 2008. She has written about Bohm’s Dialogue, worked as a Dialogue facilitator of charity Prison Dialogue (under Peter Garrett, a colleague of Bohm) and has convened groups in a variety of contexts from prisons to live art festivals.
Jonathan Drury is a multi-disciplinary artist committed to a social awakening and has facilitated dialogue in experiential learning workshops for refugees and home-schooled children. He’s also worked in areas such as victim-offender mediation and is currently involved in multifaith chaplaincy. He is also launching a wholefood social enterprise.
Jonathan and Hester are committed to spreading the use of this radical tool. Together they convened a first succesful Bohm Dialogue group for staff at Sheffield Hallam University this January and have recently been invited to facilitate Bohm Dialogue sessions for the CPD programme at Sheffield’s largest psychotherapy centre.
