Mystical Poetry: The Great Diwan of Ibn 'Arabi

May 17, 2013 09:00
Chisholme House, Scottish Borders, TD9 7PH
The Beshara School

All of the world is endowed with rhythm, fastened by rhyme, on the straight path

Ibn ʿArabi is often regarded as one of the most profound thinkers in the Islamic mystical tradition, a writer who composed complex metaphysical treatises on the Unity of Being. What is less well-known is his poetry: apart from the justly famous Tarjumān al-ashwāq (The Interpreter of Ardent Desires), little attention has been paid until recently to the enormous output of poems contained in his Diwan.

In this half-day seminar we will look at the way Ibn ʿArabi came to compose his poetic masterwork, the Great Diwan, and how he views poetry itself as a living expression of the Divine rhyme and rhythm.
We will also study in depth some of his love poems together.

Read more about Ibn 'Arabi.
