Reading Week: Ibn Arabi's Fusus al Hikam

9 March 2013 19:00 to 16 March 2013 14:00
Chisholme House, Scottish Borders, TD9 7PH

The Wisdom of Sanctity in the Word of Idris (Enoch)

A week of reading, contemplation and conversation. It is intended for people who are already familiar with Ibn 'Arabi's terminology, and the central themes of the Fusus al Hikam.

These courses provide a context for reading chapters from the Fusus al Hikam (The Wisdom of the Prophets) by Muhyiddin Ibn 'Arabi in a contemplative manner. This seminal work by Ibn 'Arabi, dating from the 13th century, describes the meaning of universal human spirituality through the medium of 27 prophetic figures, from Adam through Abraham, Moses and others to, Jesus and Mohammed.

Ibn 'Arabi's aim is to show how these each of these luminary figures exemplified a particular wisdom available to mankind; a harmonious vision of reality which integrates differences without destroying them. Themes that arise range from explorations of uniqueness, fate and destiny, the place of religion, praise and service and the role of mankind. To read this book is to encounter the full scope of what it means to be truly human. The course follows a daily programme of reading and conversation, focusing on a particular chapter of the Fusus al Hikam and points that strike the participants during the reading.

To provide a proper balance in energy and perspective, the courses also include regular meditation and periods of manual work.

Course Facilitators: Annette Robertson and Christopher Ryan
