Practising being present: a day of mindful awareness

May 8, 2016 09:30
Chisholme House, Roberton, Hawick, Scottish Borders TD9 7PH

This is a day for refreshing and deepening your practice of being present and aware. It’s an opportunity for re-establishing and re-committing to daily practice, both formally in meditation and informally as we go about our daily life. If you’ve found yourself falling away from regular practice, this is an opportunity to reconnect with yourself by simply starting again.

During the day we shall participate in key mindfulness meditations, and other practices, in stillness and in movement, and enjoy a period of working together as a group, with an emphasis of learning to turn towards our experience, whatever it is.

We shall explore the tendency of the mind to attachment or aversion: holding onto what we like and want, and pushing away what we don’t want or like, and seeing what happens when we allow and accept the reality of our experience to be just as it is in each moment, without trying to make it different. We shall explore how best to respond and let go of reacting to challenges and difficulties that arise in our life.

And since the intention to be present inevitably highlights times and ways in which we are not present, acknowledging these moments too, with a gaze of non-judgment, interest, warmth and compassion, and with clear seeing.

The day will allow us to discover ways of enhancing mindful awareness and keeping it alive in daily life, with the strong support of exploring and learning together as a group.

In the exquisite natural setting of Chisholme House, we shall be held in nature, allowing us to appreciate the richness, beauty and gift of life in whatever form it appears, and allowing the day to unfold, moment by moment.

The day is open to anyone who has completed an 8-Week Course in Mindfulness, or equivalent Mindfulness training. It is being offered by Sara Hirtenstein, a trained mindfulness teacher.

Timing: The course begins at 9.30 am and runs to 5.30pm. Morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided. You can extend the day to enjoy the peace and natural beauty of Chisholme’s grounds before taking supper at 7pm for an additional charge.

The location is Chisholme House which is set in a beautiful, secluded estate on the edge of open moorland, about 8 miles from Hawick.

How to get here...

Cost  £35 (or £47 to include supper). The cost includes meals and refreshments as described.
