Ask questions about yourself, about life, love, the world - and explore the meaning of being human – from the perspective of oneness. In a week-long retreat immerse yourself in meditation, group study and conversation, with periods of work and contemplation.
Course Programme
The day begins with meditation before breakfast, with the morning devoted to study and conversation, from the perspective of unity and oneness. As inescapable participants in this premise, we will explore its foundations, examining and questioning deeply its expression and implications in our own selves and in the world, today, in a practical sense. Texts come from a variety of sources including Rumi, Ibn ‘Arabi, and the Tao Te Ching. You will also receive an in-depth introduction to the theory and practice of Mindfulness, so you can find your own way to being present, moment by moment, to the present moment.
Lunch is followed by a short work period, perhaps in the garden, the woods or kitchen. Then, a further session of study or conversation. This may focus on a theme such as mindfulness, doubt and trust, or the place of human emotion, love and passion. A third period of meditation before supper, then in the evening various complementary activities are on offer, such as films, walks and contemplations, and weekly ‘zikr’, a devotional practice of rememorating unity through sound and movement.
As each person is unique, so each course comprises different ingredients, and no two courses are ever the same. Texts are chosen according to the themes and questions that arise from you and your fellow students.
A week will seem all too brief, but the measure of this course is in one’s own willingness to dig deep into the infinite well of being that is one’s self. If you come with an open heart and enquiring mind, there is no limit to what you might discover.
Accommodation: The course is fully residential. More about student facilities
Timing: From supper-time (7pm) on Saturday evening until the following Saturday after lunch (about 2pm).
The location is Chisholme House, a beautiful, secluded estate on the edge of open moorland, deep in the hills of the Scottish Borders. It is roughly an hour’s drive from Edinburgh, Newcastle and Carlisle, with a regular bus service from Edinburgh and Carlisle to Hawick, the nearest town.
