Discovering Unity: Two Year Modular Programme (Course 2014-2016, Module 1)

Introduction 

This programme explores through practice the connection between self-knowledge in the light of unity and congruent, effective action in the world.

While this is a part-time programme, with regard to intention and attitude it is a full-time commitment. It consists of three residential modules of two weeks each spread over the two years, together with ongoing study and practice in between, and on-line support. 

The dynamic structure of this course – combining intensive periods ‘in retreat’, working together with other students, with periods ‘in the world’, and having to work on one’s own – will encourage the integration of new learning into everyday life. It will provide a unique opportunity to address the questions that will emerge in the light of this integration.

Aim

For each participant, the establishment in themselves of a unified perspective on reality while remaining in their particular life circumstances.

Structure

This is a modular course running over two years, including three residential modules at Chisholme of two weeks each and an ongoing modular programme of personal study and practice throughout the intervening months. 

The personal study periods are split into modules of six or seven weeks. Each of these will have a particular theme, with specific readings, practices and assignments allocated to it.

Course timetable

  • Residential Module A: September 13–27 
  • Residential Module B: dates to be confirmed
  • Residential Module C: dates to be confirmed
  • The two years will each be split into six modules of six weeks each, with breaks between them and longer breaks over the time of Christmas and Easter.

 

Residential Modules

The purpose of the residential modules is to provide an intensive retreat atmosphere in which students meet together as a group, commit to an intention and to be immersed in the core ideas and practices. These will lay the foundation for the home modules, and establish the conditions for incorporating the course into their lives over the following year.

Due to the retreat nature of these modules students should be prepared to give their full and undivided attention to the course during this time, dealing beforehand with any work or family related issues that might otherwise be a source of distraction.

Timing: the residential modules start at 7pm on the Saturday evening and run until 2pm (after lunch on Saturday two weeks later.

Self-study Modules and online element

These modules will combine meditation, study, writing and other activities for the students to carry out in their own time. There will be short written assignments relating to each module.

Whilst the course aims to integrate fully into the daily lives of students and thereby a full time commitment, about 10 hours per week should be allowed to fulfill the study and other assignments during the module periods. This includes a daily meditation practice.

Students will have two interviews with a supervisor per module, and these will take place on Skype or over the telephone as appropriate if a face-face is not possible due to location.

Students will have use of a private online platform within which they will be able to access texts relating to their modules, submit their assignments and participate in a discussion forum with the other students. They will be introduced to this during the first residential module. If any student foresees problems with using an online forum due to limited computer/internet access or computer literacy they should make this clear on their application form.

Material

Material for the course will be selected from worldwide sources and texts written specifically for the Beshara School and for this course. There will be particular attention in the second year to reading Ibn Arabi’s Fusus al Hikam.

Supervision

The Course Director is Marijke Kretzers. The Course Director and some supervisorory staff will accompany the students throughout the two years of the course, some support staff may change half way through.

All supervisory staff have extensive experience in the manner of education of the Beshara School.

There will be regular student interviews to offer additional support throughout the two years. 

Visit to Turkey

There is a Beshara School trip to Turkey each year to visit sites of important cultural and spiritual significance. Students of the Two Year Modular Course are invited to join this at least once, preferably during the second year of the course. Dates and itinerary will be released nearer the time.

Entry procedure and requirements
The Two Year Modular Programme is not an introductory course:

  • Students are advised to undertake a short introductory Beshara School course, at Chisholme House or elsewhere, to become familiar with the process and perspective within which the education is offered.
  • An application form needs to be sumitted, which is available from secretary@beshara.org
  • An interview (Skype or telephone if face-face is not possible)

 

Location

The location for the residential modules is Chisholme House set on a beautiful estate in the hills of the Scottish Borders, an hour's drive from Edinburgh, Newcastle and Carlisle.

Cost

The successful applicant is committing to the full two year programme, including all three residential modules. 

The fee for the two year programme, including the three residential modules at Chisholme House, is £2850 in total, if paid upfront, or £2950 if paid in instalments.

A non-refundable deposit of £250 is payable on your being accepted for the course. The balance may be paid in a lump sum at the beginning of the first residential module, or in three instalments of £900 payable at the start of each residential module. Arrangements for other methods of payment (e.g. monthly instalments) may be possible upon application.

The course fee does not include the visit to Turkey, which students are encouraged to join in the second year of the course (in December). The approximate cost of this trip is £900, plus about £200 personal spending money.

In the event of  the student's withdrawal from the course due to unforeseen circumstances, the deposit is non-refundable. The balance however will be refunded on a pro-rata basis.
